The best way to determine a potential problem is by monitoring your water meter. Turn off all water indoors and outdoors, including sprinklers, ice makers, etc. and observe the meter for several minutes. If the low flow indicator moves, it may indicate a small, consistent leak. If the “Low Flow Indicator” shows no obvious movement upon initial observation, a comparison reading could be done to further determine any issue.
For this test a customer will use the actual meter readings to determine if consumption is taking place when water is not being used by equipment on the property. This requires no water to be used during the test and all water faucets, sprinklers, and other fixtures to be turned off. Before starting the test a full meter reading will need to be recorded (maybe take a picture of the register with the reading and dial location noted). Once a period of time has passed (it is suggested a few hours) a second reading of the register (or another picture) can be used to compare the two. If upon comparison you find that the number has increased on the odometer and / or the dial location has changed, you may have some sort of issue. This same test can be used to compare two months of water use, subtract last month’s water use from this month’s. In the examples above, you get 8,230 gallons of water used. While your meter tracks water usage down to the tens, you are only billed in the thousands.
